Date night for parents: how to keep dating when you have kids

6 min read

After kids, date night often becomes the first thing to go: too tired, too expensive, too complicated to arrange. But the couple is the foundation the family stands on. Dating as parents is less about grand evenings and more about protecting small ones.

Lower the bar, raise the frequency

A two-hour evening once a week beats a perfect night out twice a year. Aim for regular and simple, not rare and spectacular.

After-bedtime dates

  • Takeaway from the place you went before kids, eaten by candlelight.
  • A card or board game with a small bet (loser does the school run).
  • A “no logistics” rule: 30 minutes without talking about the kids, the calendar or the house.
  • Watch the first episode of a show neither of you has seen.

Getting out of the house

  • Swap babysitting with another couple: you take theirs one Friday, they take yours the next.
  • Try a daytime date while the kids are at school or nursery: a long lunch counts.
  • Use grandparents for regular slots, not just emergencies.

Take the planning off your plate

Parents are already the household’s project managers. A date night that needs another round of planning rarely happens. Let something else pick the idea, and filter for at-home or cheap dates when that is all the week allows.

Make it a ritual.
