A long-distance relationship does not lack love. It lacks shared context: the same room, the same weather, the same bad restaurant. Good long-distance dates rebuild a bit of that shared world, even through a screen.
Do the same thing, not just talk
A video call where you only talk gets tiring. A call where you both do something together feels like an evening. The screen becomes a window, not the whole date.
- Cook the same recipe at the same time and eat “together”.
- Start the same film with a countdown and keep the call on mute.
- Do a 1000-piece puzzle each, and race to finish.
- Go for a walk at the same time and describe what you see.
Add a surprise you can both open
Distance kills spontaneity, so bring it back on purpose. Mail a sealed envelope to open on a set date, or scratch a Scratchy Moments card on a video call while your partner watches, so you both find out at the same moment what tonight is.
Respect the time zones
- Pick a fixed weekly slot that works for both clocks, and protect it.
- Alternate who stays up late.
- Keep a short “good morning / good night” ritual for the gap days.
Plan the next real date
Nothing makes the distance lighter than a date on the calendar when you will be in the same place. Keep a shared list of things to do when you are together, and add to it after every call.
