Anniversary date ideas beyond the fancy dinner

6 min read

The anniversary dinner is a classic for a reason, but after a few years it can start to feel like a reservation rather than a celebration. The best anniversary dates look back at your story and add a new chapter to it.

Look back

  • Recreate your first date as closely as you can: same place, same order, same awkward questions.
  • Walk the route of an important day: where you met, where you moved in, where you got engaged.
  • Make a year-in-review: each of you picks three moments from the past year and tells the story.

Do something new together

Novelty makes moments memorable, so give the anniversary its own first: a class, a day trip to a town neither of you knows, a dish you have never cooked. Next year, you will remember it as “the anniversary we…”.

Make it last beyond the evening

  • Write each other a short letter to open on the next anniversary.
  • Take the same photo in the same spot every year.
  • Add the evening to your scrapbook, with one line from each of you.

Keep it about the two of you

An anniversary does not have to be expensive or perfect. It has to be personal. If you are stuck, choose the idea that only the two of you would understand.
