After a few years together, conversations drift toward logistics: who picks up what, when the bill is due, what is for dinner. A good question on date night reopens the part of your partner you fell for: their stories, opinions and odd little theories.
Light and playful
- What is a small thing that made you unreasonably happy this month?
- If we had a free Saturday and no budget limit, how would you spend it?
- Which fictional couple are we most like, honestly?
- What is a skill you would learn overnight if you could?
Looking back
- What is a memory of us that you think about more than I would guess?
- When did you first realise this was serious?
- What did you believe about relationships at 18 that you have changed your mind about?
Looking forward
- What is one thing you want us to try together this year?
- Where do you picture us living in ten years, if anything were possible?
- What would make an ordinary week feel better for you?
How to ask so it works
Ask one question, then really listen. Follow up with “tell me more” instead of jumping to your own answer. Keep your phones away. And do not turn it into an interview: two or three good questions can carry a whole evening.
